The very comfortable DGX Gears SoftPack harness is an excellent value that includes a well padded soft backplate integrated with well padded shoulder and waist straps. Weighing less { 4 lb | 2 kg } the harness includes 11-inch centers grommets for use with an optional single tank adapter for compatibility with any brand of wing.
Features include:
- Three highly adjustable sizes: Small, Large, X-Large
- Five {2 in | 5 cm} D-rings (two on right shoulder, one on left shoulder, and two on the waist)
- Hook and loop epaulet on left shoulder for BC inflator hose
- Four {1 in | 2.5 cm} D-rings (two on each side of soft backplate) to attach accessories
- Soft backplate with backpad for maximum comfort, with standard 11-inch centers mounting grommets
- Padded shoulders, adjustable length harness webbing with slide release buckles
- Padded waist, harness webbing with S/S quick-release buckle
- Chest strap, adjustable length { 1 in | 2.5 cm } webbing with slide release
- Crotch strap, adjustable length { 1.5 in | 3.8 cm } soft webbing with slide release
- Does NOT include tank straps; an optional single-tank-adapter with tank straps is available.
The waist and shoulder stainless steel D-rings, as well as the epaulet, are position adjustable as well as removable. We are sometimes asked if the SoftPack can have a rigid metal plate "added"; the answer is no. Because the SoftPack is designed for comfort, combining hard and soft plates together wouldn't produce any benefit. However, the soft backplate padding is also removable.
Choice of Three Sizes Fit Most Adults: The Large and X-Large size have the same 18-inch long soft backplate, and differ only in the length of the shoulder padding. The Small has as shorter 16-inch long size backplate with proportionately shorter shoulder pads. The waist straps on all the sizes are very generous thus not normally a concern for sizing and can be trimmed for fit as desired. There is considerable adjustability in the shoulder straps, so sizing is not critical: Size the harness based on your preference for a US adult men's t-shirt size (use next larger t-shirt size for reference if wearing thick wetsuit):
- Choose the Small size harness if you wear an x-small or small size t-shirt
- Choose the Large size harness if you wear a medium or large size t-shirt
- Choose the X-Large size harness if you wear an x-large or xx-large size t-shirt
- If you have an exceptionally short or long torso, then the sizes available in this harness may not be appropriate

Types of Back Inflation BC Systems
Compared with the typical 'jacket style' BC, the harness with back inflation style BC systems offer precise control of buoyancy and trim as well as having a very streamlined profile with the entire front of the diver being clean. Although there is a lot of crossover of features, back inflation buoyancy control systems offered by Dive Gear Express can be roughly divided into four types:
- Webbing Harnesses and Wings with Rigid Metal Backplates - Highly modular, these systems allow you to choose your type of harness, type of plate, and type of wing (aircell) to build a configuration uniquely suited to your needs and style of diving. The harnesses are available in Basic and Deluxe styles. The Basic harness is made from a single piece of continuous webbing. The Deluxe harness incorporates a chest strap and shoulder-strap pivot rings that increase comfort. Some manufacturers have introduced versions of the deluxe harness that allow for quick release and/or rapid cinch adjustments to length. The Hogarthian harness, sometimes called the 'DIR' harness, is a version of the continuous webbing harness with some specific refinements for a minimalist approach to dive gear configuration.
- Adjustable Harnesses and Wings with Soft Backpacks - Although there are padding options available for metal plates, some divers still find the rigid backplate and simple webbing harness systems uncomfortable. The soft backpack design is more comfortable yet still a modular system of harness and backplate with a separate wing, however the backplate is made from flexible high-tech material that incorporates lumbar support together with ergonomic adjustable shoulder straps.
- BC Systems for Travel - These are typically non-modular designs focused on minimizing size and weight while still offering some of the benefits of a technical diving back inflation BCD. They are increasingly finding acceptance for all sport diving because entry level divers seeking back inflation BC systems appreciate their value price.
- BC Systems for Sidemount - These designs are highly specialized systems originally intended for use in very confined spaces like caves. Sidemount harnesses are gaining more widespread use as individuals who had to shy away from performing dives that required heavy backmount tanks, such as divers with small stature or back problems, are now able to comfortably perform their dives due to the ease of managing sidemount configurations
