Finger Spools

Pricelist  [Currency]

In the early days of cave diving, guideline reels were not available for purchase and divers made their own using anything they could find. Cave diving pioneer Woody Jasper used a medical tape spool with cover to hold a short length of line for use as a gap reel. North Florida cave diver Bill Hogarth Main popularized using smaller electrical wire spools for safety and jump reels. Today, purpose built finger spools are more ergonomically designed and constructed from more durable materials than the original homemade solutions. The holes in the side allow for clipping a double ended snap anywhere along the perimeter of the finger spool to keep the line tight when not in use. Small and low-profile, a finger spool fits nicely out of the way in a pocket or clipped off to a D-ring. The larger finger spools are also an alternative to reels for shooting lift bags and surface marking tubes.

> Large and Small Finger Spools

Small enough to stow in an accessory pocket, these "no-frills" spools can substitute for jump/gap reels and safety reels. The large finger spool is a good choice for open water divers who seek a very low-profile reel for use with marking/lift bags. These injection molded polycarbonate one piece finger spools include a marine grade double eye stainless steel bolt snap. The small reel is loaded with { 50 ft |
15 m } and the large reel with { 125 ft | 38 m } of standard #24 cave line in white or orange. Also available as a Dive Gear Express exclusive with our custom-made Hi-Viz Dacron Line, in your choice of Hi-Viz Dacron Orange or Hi-Viz Dacron Yellow.

Size #24 Line Hi-Viz Line Diameter Width Center Hole
Small 50 ft 80 ft 3 in 1.5 in 1 in
15 m 24 m 7.6 cm 3.8 cm 2.5 cm
Large 125 ft 150 ft 3.5 in 1.75 in 1.38 in
38 m 46 m 8.9 cm 4.5 cm 3.5 cm

The Dive Gear Express exclusive Hi-Viz Dacron Line is better than the generic nylon line commonly used in diving applications because it is high tenacity, braided DuPont Dacron®. Hi-Viz Dacron costs a bit more than generic nylon line, but this abrasion resistant line has slightly negative buoyancy, won't twist or kink, and has minimal stretch. Our Hi-Viz Dacron line is stronger than #36 nylon line, yet is slightly thinner than #24 nylon line, so we are able to load extra on the reel. White line is difficult to see in open water, but our Hi-Viz Line stands out like neon, allowing easier line management with nearby divers. Available in both orange and yellow colors, choose Hi-Viz Dacron Orange for best distance visibility or Hi-Viz Dacron Yellow for best low-light visibility.

LM Finger Spool Comparisons

The durable Light Monkey Finger Spools are machined from solid Delrin and this heavier material yields a balanced neutral buoyancy. The mini-spool version is very small yet has enough line for most gaps and the compact size allows you to carry several. The regular spool is also available in a version with a larger diameter center hole better suited to use with cold water drysuit gloves. All spools include a marine quality 316 stainless steel double-ender and #24 white cave line. Also available with an upgrade to Dive Gear Express exclusive custom-made Hi-Viz Dacron Line, in your choice of Hi-Viz Dacron Orange or Hi-Viz Dacron Yellow.

Finger Spools Are Not Guideline Reels

The skills required to deploy a finger spool are different than those required to use a typical guideline reel. At first glance the simple spool looks easier, but compared to guideline reels the finger spool requires specific techniques for successful use. If this is your first finger spool then seek advice, get a demonstration, and most importantly you should practice under controlled conditions.

A common usage mistake is rewinding a finger spool in a manner that applies a lot of tension to the line, such as when hanging under a lift bag, causing the line to be very tightly wound on to the spool. Upon re-use the line doesn't smoothly unwind and sticks, causing the entire spool to be jerked out of the fingers or disappear with the lift bag.

Another consideration is the method used to rewind the line on to the spool. Hold the line loosely and use the spool to take up the line; if you hold the spool in a fixed position some wrapping motions with your hand will put a 'twist' in the line with each wrap around the spool. Depending on how you later unspool, you might wind up with a tangled mess of line (aka 'birds nest') if you hold the line in your hand while it unspools.

> WAspool Deluxe Finger Spool w/Glove Rod

WhiteArrow is a small Italian company making high quality innovative products for technical diving. The WAspool all purpose deluxe finger spool is a { 3 in | 7.6 cm } diameter by { 2 in | 5.1 cm } wide size with quality machined and polished solid Delrin construction featuring very smooth rounded edges on the outside diameters and the finger holes. The WAspool comes standard with their unique stainless-steel “Line Swivel” which helps eliminate line twisting, and a Glove Rod to make it easier to use with thick drygloves in very cold water. Also WA does not use knots in their line (a knot reduces the strength of the line by 30% - 35%) and all line loops are sewn together for added strength. A 316SS Double Ender and WA neoprene carrying pouch are also included.

WA Delrin Spool with Neoprene Carrying Pouch and Double Ender WhiteArrow offers their WAspool loaded with { 262 ft | 80 m } of 100kg line yellow color Dyneema® line. Dyneema- "The Worlds Strongest Fiber™" - is 15 times stronger than steel and covered in an abrasive resistant outer sleeve. It is this strength that allows WA to use very thin line, yet still stronger than ordinary nylon cave line, to allow more line on the spool and also reduce drag. This WAspool is a good choice for shooting marking buoys for deco and as a substitute for a safety or primary reel. We know of no other finger spool this compact yet holding over 260 feet of line.

For divers who have an application that requires ultra strong line, WhiteArrow also offers their WASPOOL loaded with { 118 ft | 36 m } of orange color Edelrid brand 200Kg line. Edelrid is a German manufacturer of safety ropes and harnesses. Relative to it's { 440 lb | 200 kg } strength this unique line is surprisingly thin and pliable. For example, this WAspool is the right choice if you are ocean diving and towing a flag or buoy with a DPV, or actually using your lift bag to lift and send an object to the surface.

{ 165 ft | 50 m } of orange 35kg nylon line, and a compact 'Shorty' version is also available. The WAjoomp comes standard with their revolutionary “line swivel” which helps eliminates line twisting, and a Glove Rod to make it easier to use with thick drygloves in very cold water.
