Compass with Hose Mount Oil-filled for operation to depths of { 260 ft | 80 m }, this value priced compass offers multiple mounting options. It can be mounted to any standard HP hose or worn on the wrist with the included rubber strap. It features a rotating 360-degree bezel with click stops and both direct and reciprocal index points. Large, easy-to-read numbers are displayed on the face and in the side window, with index marks at 10-degree increments.

This compact compass is a good choice for those divers who just need to know general direction, i.e. the dive briefing is 'swim west' and you need to know which direction to swim. However, if you want more sophisticated navigation, i.e. swim a series of headings such as search box, then we recommend our Tech or Pro Compass.

Tiny Bubbles?

All our dive compasses are liquid filled, not with champagne, but with mineral oil to dampen the movement of the compass card and also protect the compass case from pressure at depth. The liquid is sealed in these compasses with a bubble of air. Liquids are considered incompressible; the air bubble provides an balancing expansion space because air is very compressible. A bubble will prevent the case from breaking when the liquid expands if heated. The bubble will change in size or even disappear entirely depending on temperature and pressure, including altitude and weather.

A small bubble is normal, but compass manufacturers recommend replacing the compass if at sea level and room temperature a bubble larger than { 0.25 in | 6 mm} develops. A larger bubble is indicative of a defective compass.

Pro Compass Detail Pro Compass The professional grade Deluxe Pro Compass features a tilt potential of +/- 30° which is much better than in conventional diving compasses, the trade-off being that the compass is taller than normal (although still slightly lower profile than the competition.) The liquid-filled compass has a phosphorescent compass card with fast accurate response and a large side reading window. The firm grip bezel, offering very easy-to-read large high contrast numerals with a ratchet at every fifth degree, is smooth turning in all conditions. Our Deluxe Pro Compass performance compares favorably with the brand name compass in its class, and our value price includes a low profile depth compensating bungee mount plus the bungee (aka shock cord). Available in versions balanced for either the Northern Hemisphere or the Southern Hemisphere.

Compass Balance Zones

High quality analog compasses are designed for use within a certain area of the globe because the earths magnetic field not only varies horizontally, but also vertically, causing the needle to dip downward when the case is held level. The compass needle card is balanced with a small weight to counteract the downward dip, so the needle card does not drag or stick on the top or bottom of the capsule. If you take any compass to a significantly different part of the globe than where it was balanced, check the compass carefully before relying upon it. Our technical diving compasses are balanced either for the Northern Hemisphere or the Southern Hemisphere

Note that digital compasses, like the ones becoming popular in dive computers, do not have balance zones. Digital compasses are universal because they have a user 'calibration' feature, which is performed in the region where the diver plans to use the compass. A change in region simply requires a recalibration before use in new location.
