Handheld 700 Series LED Dive Light

Dive Rite's LED 700 Series Dive Light delivers illumination for over 12-hours on eight AA 1.5V alkaline batteries. The design incorporates a unique LED system created especially for divers that delivers an outstanding combination of high light output and very long burn time. Brighter than other technical backup lights in its class, the LED 700 delivers 6,750 Lux @ 1 meter and 750 Lux @ 3 meters. The Dive Rite 700 Series light is so bright it can serve in three light classes: a value priced technical primary, a technical backup, and an excellent sport primary.

With a brightness greater than 10W HID lights, the durable LED's offer the advantage of a 10,000 hour life and resist breakage. The 6500° Kelvin color temperature of the LED's is whiter when compared to the HID bulb. The LED 700 light burns at full brightness for at least 12-hours and then slowly dims as battery voltage declines, yielding usable light for up to 30 hours.

The LED 700 Series light features twist-on activation with a knurled grip handle making the light easy to use even while wearing gloves. Operational to a depth of 500 feet with a double o-ring seal, the light has a bezel design that prevents inadvertent activation due to pressure at depth. Less than a pound in weight, at 8-inches long and 1.8-inches in diameter the LED 700 is perfect for travel. A wrist lanyard is included, the waist mount pocket as optionally available.

Batteries are not included. The LED 700 light can use eight AA size 1.5V alkaline primary batteries or eight NiMH rechargable batteries. For rechargables, we've had very good luck with the MAHA Energy brand 2700 mAh Powerex batteries and MH-C800S Charger. However, if the light is truly being used to backup a primary light, then best practice is the batteries in the backup light should not also be rechargable.

The package allows you to easily switch between the hand-held and the corded configuration. The mesh pocket with Velcro® closure is easily mountable on any 2-inch webbing waist strap. The Textilene® mesh pocket drains easily as well as being abrasion and tear resistant. A Nylon stiffener helps the pocket retain it's form for ease of replacing the light back in the pocket. If you wish, the pocket can also be used to protect the light during storage. The Goodman hand mount offers the option of a traditional canister light hand mount and is made from stainless steel. Hand clearance is adjustable by loosening screws found on both sides of the handle. The handy carry case includes foam padding and keeps all the components organized.

The Corded Configuration with a corded light head and separate battery canister offers an even smaller form-factor in your hand and the option of traditional hands-free mounting with the included goodman handle. A nice feature of the corded configuration is that simply by adding or removing the 44-inch cord assembly, the light may be quickly and easy converted between the corded and hand-held configurations. To convert from the hand-held to corded configuration simply screw the light head directly into the female attachment of the cord assembly and the male attachment of the cord assembly to the battery section. You can secure the battery pack onto the waist belt or a backplate using the pocket.

What is the difference between the handheld and primary LED lights?

The difference is a lot more than brightness. The hand held LED needs just a few hundred milli amps of current to operate, which is easy to maintain with good quality alkaline batteries. The hand held gets many more hours of burn time than the primary; achieved by utilizing special electronics driver that adjusts the power demand. The reason the hand held LED can burn so long is because the driver tapers the power consumption, which in turn decreases the load on the batteries in order to maintain a usable light output for a long period of time. There is a decrease in light as the batteries are discharged, but the rate is so slow the eye doesn't notice an appreciable change. Your eyes adjust to the surrounding light and it appears to stay almost the same intensity. After the first few hours, there is a noticeable drop as the driver reduces the voltage requirement but does yield many more hours of useable light.

LED technology can also be configured as a true primary light requiring an external battery canister. In order to achieve the brighter light output of a primary light, the LED driver electronics draws much more current. Although the higher current draw requires a more powerful canister style battery, since this is true primary light, the driver design delivers a consistent light that does not taper as the burn time increases. This gives the primary LED light the punch needed to surpass the previous generation of HID lights, yet with the more powerful battery still yields many hours of burn time at maximum light output.

Beyond light output, there are also differences in design application. The handheld LED is the perfect light for travel and as a back up light for technical diving or an excellent primary light for sport divers. The primary LED lights are truly the new age of primary lighting with longer bulb life and more robust design than HID lighting for technical diving environments.
